Life recollected

As we sped past the banks on fragile coracles,
we yearned to join the scenes thereon unfolding,
but currents, as obscure and stern as oracles,
were stronger than our will to flee their molding.

The silken veil, behind which truth was hidden,
could not be rent by sword, nor could be lifted
by hand nor thought of those who did or didn’t
aspire to be among the truly gifted.

We loved and hurt, we buried and we raised,
we gave and took, recalled and we forgot,
we lost and found, forgave and built and razed,
we shared our lot. Some moved the world some not.

All ends, though not resolved, beneath old skies,
all pass beyond who can undo the ties.
